Évora;
Megalithic Ride I
This
is a technically easy ride through an undulating landscape
of cork and olive, though the length of the ride and a few
climbs here and there will present a moderate physical challenge.
We will be riding through the area of oldest human habitation
on the Iberian Peninsula, and signs are everywhere. On the
way to the Dolmen we will pass by Menhir before the Cromlech,
all Megalithic Monuments, 3000 to 5000 year old!
The landscape is composed of the typical
Montado Alentejano and allows you to
see Évora from afar. Reaching
Evora's cobblestoned, walled, history
center, we will pause at the main square
of Praça do Giraldo, where every
street converges. Once in Évora,
we can ride or sightsee or both.
Évora is not a museum of individual
pieces. It is an urban entity that
should be discovered. It is: the atmosphere
of the streets, the light and shade
on the whitewashed walls, the Jewish
quarter and the Moorish quarter, the
houses molded by the aqueduct, the
passageways where clothes hang to dry,
the arcades that sustain and shelter,
the wrought-iron balconies, the fountains
that offer benches to sit on, the detail
of the graffiti or of the plaster plaques,
the glimpsed-inner patio, and the noble
main squares and the popular small
ones.
The city of Évora has a rich,
beautifully-preserved heritage. It
is now listed as an UNESCO World Heritage
site. Not far from the city itself,
the plains of Évora also have
plenty to offer in terms of heritage
and culture and nature too,
of course. It's a place of rare tranquility
and harmony. Come and discover it!
