The Minho – Galizia Region is a remarkably well-preserved region not only in terms of its landscape, heritage and architecture, but also for its culture and tradition – and we will make sure you experience these at their best.

Day 1 Guimarães – The Cradle of Portugal
Guimarães classified as an Unesco World Heritage Site is considered the cradle of Portugal as it is the birthplace of our first King. Take some time to explore the well preserved medieval city centre, it’s Castle and Royal Palace.

Day 2 Rio Caldo – Terras de Bouro
You will ride through a variety of villages that will take you away from the bustling town of Guimarães and into the quiet and lush countryside area of Terras de Bouro. Your ride will end along the reservoir of Caniçada, where we could go for a refreshing swim at the of the day. (31km/20m)

Day 3 Entering Peneda-Geres Lakes
Ride past Roman milestones and cross the border into Spain as your follow to the Thermal town of Lobios, where you can relax on the thermal spring of “Rio Caldo” (warm river waters). In this intact and remote Park you may come across some horses living in the wild! (80km/50m)

Day 4 Peneda-Geres Mountain Range
You will cycle through a remote mountain range dominated by granitic outcrops and scarce vegetation, past quaint villages with traditional stone walls and cobbled streets. You leave the National Park and bike your way down towards the River Minho Valley and the medieval town of Melgaço. (53km/33m)

Day 5 Minho River Valley
Discover the fertile River Minho Valley, well known for its unique “Vinho Alvarinho” (Green Wines). As you pass by a medieval borderline town with great views over the River, you will ride on a “Rails to Trails” Bike Lane into the fortified medieval town of Valença (45km/28m)

Day 6 Galicia and the Atlantic Islands
After crossing Valença’s Eiffel Bridge you will enter Spain and ride across pine trees and eucalyptus forests on our way to the seaside medieval town of Baiona. An optional ferry ride will take you to the Cies Islands, part of the Atlantic Islands of the Galicia National Park. (31km/19m)

Day 7 Portuguese Coast
You will ride on a scenic road along the cliff coast until you reach the River Minho. Take the ferry back to Portugal and you will cycle across farming fields into Viana do Castelo. Take some time to explore the historical centre of this a traditional fisherman village. (68km/42m)

Day 8 Lima River Marshlands
After riding across River Lima you will bike on its south bank on a beautiful riverside Bike Lane until you reach serene town of Ponte de Lima with its incredible well preserved Roman Bridge, a medieval atmosphere, incredible manor houses, churches and really nice squares. (30km/19m)

Day 9 Departure Day
Take some time to stroll around the town centre or the banks of the River Lima.

We enjoyed the topography, which was challenging but did not leave us too exhausted to enjoy visiting towns, spas and water adventures in the afternoon when we were done riding.

Part of what was a real treat was the well-scoped trips – full of historic sensibility, like the Roman roads, plus local flavour.

We love it that the world does differ – that the countryside in northern Portugal is full of small firms, with their own vineyards and corn and vegetables.

We knew we had travelled someplace special.

Guest Reviews about this Tour

Road Self-Guided Bike Tour

I think water elements just about every day were GREAT. It felt so great to be in the water after or in the middle of a day of riding. I thought the hotels were a great mix of luxurious, local, interesting, historic, comfortable.
