ITINERARY
Day 1 Lisbon’s Old and New and River Tagus views
Winding streets lead to Lisbon’s Cathedral, the Camino’s starting point. Cycle the lively waterfront and then explore Parque das Nações, where the 98 EXPO took place. Once in Lisbon’s suburbs a riverfront bike lane takes you to your destination.
Lisboa – Vila Franca de Xira: 40 kms – 25 miles | 350 m – 1148 ft
Day 2 River Tagus Fertile Valley and Santarem
Discover the Ribatejo (Tejo Bank) Region with its fertile Lezirias, (vast plains periodically flooded by the river), and its cattle grazing grounds. Seated on a hilltop, therefore a great viewpoint town, Santarém is well known for its Gothic monuments.
Vila Franca de Xira – Santarém: 55 kms – 34 miles | 220 m – 722 ft
Day 3 Lusitano Horses and the Portuguese Knights Templars Seat
A ride through farm fields brings you to Golegã, famous for its horse breading and Portugal’s major equestrian events. Later in Tomar, with its mystical Templar connections that still linger today, the Convent of Christ is definitely worth a visit.
Santarém – Tomar: 59 kms – 37 miles | 290 m – 951 ft
Day 4 Entering the Centro de Portugal Region
As you leave the Tagus Valley behind, the vast plains give place to forests hills. Soon, small villages, deserted settlements and nature will surround you on a quiet path as you enter central Portugal.
Tomar – Ansião: 45 kms – 28 miles | 690 m – 2264 ft
Day 5 Coimbra, land of Culture and Historical Legacy
Follow your way through countryside back roads into Penela with its well-preserved medieval castle. Pedal through Coimbra, an important city since before the Romans, capital of Portugal during the Middle ages and home to one of Europe’s oldest universities.
Ansião – Coimbra: 44 kms – 27 miles | 590 m – 19376 ft
Day 6 From the Countryside to the Oceanside
A popular Fado song says Coimbra charms you the most when you say farewell, take a last look at Coimbra’s hilltop before you cycle along the Mondego River. Following the wetlands takes you to the popular beach resort of Figueira da Foz.
Coimbra – Figueira da Foz: 47 kms – 27 miles | 100 m – 328 ft
Day 7 Hilltop Ocean Views and Marshlands
The towering Cabo Mondego brings endless views over the Atlantic Ocean, before riding through a forested area. Watch the scenery change as you pedal further along marshlands into Costa Nova. Cruise across a strip of land between the beach and the lagoon lined with colorful “striped” houses, before reaching Aveiro.
Figueira da Foz – Aveiro: 80 kms – 50 miles | 320 m – 1050 ft
Day 8 Aveiro the Portuguese “Venice”
Aveiro crisscrossed by canals, is filled with colorful boats and surrounded by Art Nouveau buildings. Cycle alongside the Aveiro Lagoon before a forest area leads into oceanfront bike lanes. As you ride side by side the Douro River, soon Porto in its full splendour will astound you.
Aveiro – Porto: 82 kms – 51 miles | 410 m – 1345 ft
Day 9 Explore and Experience the beautiful Porto
Discover the historical medieval center and take a relaxed stroll along the Ribeira (waterfront) to admire the Douro River and its boats once again. Surely, no visit to Porto is complete without a Porto Wine tasting.
Day 10 From the Blue Ocean to the Green Wooded Countryside
Follow the Douro River to the Atlantic Ocean for a last ride along the deep blue sea. As you leave Vila do Conde, the forests is a constant background until reaching the 12th century town of Barcelos, represented by a brightly-colored Rooster.
Porto – Barcelos: 64 kms – 40 miles | 570 m – 1870 ft
Day 11 Entering Minho’s Region Heartland
Ride past Barcelos’ busy surroundings into Minho’s quiet countryside. Soon small hamlets with ancient churches and chapels will become a constant. Finally Ponte de Lima, its medieval narrow cobblestone streets and tranquil waterfront is definitely worth the visit.
Barcelos – Ponte de Lima: 33 kms – 21 miles | 390 m – 1280 ft
Day 12 River Valleys and Forest Hilltops
The Lima River and the Minho River Valleys are home to small family farms and vineyards, not to mention quaint villages. Later Valença, an imposing 17th century Vauban style fortress overlooks the Minho River and the Galician town of Tui.
Ponte de Lima – Valença: 40 kms – 25 miles | 670 m – 2198 ft
Day 13 Entering Evergreen Galicia with a Blue background in Rias Bajas
The century old bridge designed by the Eiffel Studio takes you to Tui in Spain, once there visit its castle-like Cathedral with impressive battlements. Soon, the forested mountains will turn into an undulating terrain with the Rias Bajas, (estuary-lagoon area) in sight as you reach Pontevedra.
Valença – Pontevedra: 57 kms – 35 miles | 1020 m – 3346 ft
Day 14 Forest areas and a Hot Spring Town
Pontevedra’s has a well-preserved historical town center, therefore, filled with remarkable churches and monasteries, manor houses and a quaint main square. Riding past forest areas, takes you into Caldas de Reis, known since Roman times for its hot healing waters.
Pontevedra – Caldas de Reis: 32 kms – 20 miles | 500 m – 1640 ft
Day 15 Enjoy the Ride you will soon know Santiago
Anticipation builds as you get closer to Santiago, the last pedal strokes take you along farm fields and the Galician hills all the way to your destination. Reaching the Cathedral is every pilgrim’s objective, finally, your Camino Bike Trip will be accomplished.
Caldas de Reis – Santiago: 47 kms – 29 miles | 830 m – 2723 ft
Day 16 Fairewell
Take some time to admire and explore the beauty of Santiago de Compostela’s old town, classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
