On the Alentejo Bike Tour ride through villages that seem to have stopped in time and
discover a remarkably well-preserved region.
Day 1 Welcome to Alentejo – Evora : Open air museum
In and around ancient lands, long-gone times seem to come back to life. Quiet backroads take you to some of the most important Megalithic Monuments in the Iberia. Ride through a well-preserved city center, full of extraordinary monuments (UNESCO world heritage) lined with romantic cobble-stoned lanes
(optional ride > 40km > 25m)
Day 2 Travel Back to the Megalith Times
Follow your way on a Rails to Trails converted Bike Lane along vast plains and rolling hills while enjoying the quietness of Alentejo. Once in Arraiolos, well known for its hand-made tapestries, mingle with the locals in the main square and admire its round shaped castle with Celtic origins. (51km/32m or 26km/16m)
Day 3 Ride along Beautiful Olive Groves
Bike across fertile valleys and through small villages, you can still see women embroidering tapestries in front of their houses. An eye catching vineyard welcomes you to Estremoz. Enter the town through the drawbridge and ride the old town slate paved streets all the way up to the Castle and its Keep Tower with spectacular views over the farmlands. (66km/40m)
Day 4 Vila Viçosa – The White Gold Capital
Pedal on the small back roads that connect the Marble Quarries, these open air mining sites are impressive. In Vila Viçosa, everything seems to be made of marble, from the small cobbles on the pavement, benches and on the streets to its imposing Ducal Palace. A short ride allows you to further explore this town. (21km/13m)
Day 5 Crossing Ancient Fortresses & Borders
Ride through small villages, long forgotten castles and a very unusual fortress-like Chapel. Wander the whitewashed hilltop village of Monsaraz, with its charming cobblestoned streets and Keep Tower. It is definitely a perfect place to enjoy great views from every angle over the plains and the Alqueva Lake. (48km/30m or 56km/35m)
Day 6 Vineyards & Wine
In this remote area characteristic whitewashed villages are hidden in the rolling hills. Scenic back roads take you through endless vineyards and olive groves, where renowned Portuguese wine and olive oil are produced. The vision of an old Castle on top of a vineyard is the perfect memento of Alentejo’s stillness. (62km/39m)

Eat & Drink
Bread, olive oil and herbs are the basis of the Alentejo Gastronomy.
Black Iberian pig is must try. Acorn fed on open fields gives its distinct nutty flavor.
So are the Açordas, variations of bread soup, the broth seasoned with crushed garlic, corriander, salt and olive oil. It can also include seafood or eggs.
Sopa de Cação, dogfish stew is also a popular dish!
For Petiscos, or tapas, smoked meat and various cheeses.
Dessert brings conventual sweets, with origins from the convents;
Where there was an excess of eggs, sugar, milk, etc.
Try the Sericaia, a soft cake served with a syrupy sweet plum or
Pão de Rala a small treat made with almonds and pumpkin.
Alentejo offers renowned wines recognized all over the world,
With red wines that tend to be intense while the white wines are fresh and aromatic.
