Moderate with some longer days
Explore more than 200 km of Europe’s westernmost coastline. From Lisbon to Lagos the Atlantic coast varies constantly; only the spectacular views to the never-ending ocean remain the same. The SW Coast is one the most beautiful and untouched coastlines in Southern Europe.
Day 1 Ride through Arrabida Nature Reserve
Arrabida slopes offer great views over the Troia Peninsula and the Sado Estuary River with its mud flats, shallow lagoons and salt marshes. Follow to Setubal and taste great fresh fish and seafood. (50km/32m; 75 km/47m)
Day 2 Sado Estuary and its Rice Paddies
Riding along the sea will take you through a fishing and rice producer community before reaching the rice paddies of Comporta. You will continue past vineyards and beautiful lagoons. (90km/56m)
Day 3 Seaside Ridding
Riding a tiny layer of paved road bordering the Atlantic to Porto Covo beaches, where you will enjoy vantage views of this immense blue ocean. Porto Covo is a welcoming picturesque small village, with very attractive sand beaches hidden in the cliff shore! (35km/22m)
Day 4 Costa Vicentina Nature Reserve
As you continue South, you will realize that the landscape is changing. The coast will now be dominated by cliffs and the sea will become even more powerful. You will go on quiet back roads, unknown to most people and only popular among fishermen. (54km/33m)
Day 5 Crossing Regions
Leave the Alentejo and enter the Algarve Region to explore some of the wildest areas of the west coat with its deserted beaches much appreciated by surfers. Once in Aljezur you can ride up to the Moorish Castle and enjoy splendid views towards the “Serra de Monchique” and scent the unique rosemary fragrance. (40km/24m)
Day 6 The Sea & the Discoveries
You will have the opportunity to discover beautiful ochre cliffs and attractive sand beaches, before reaching the extreme southwestern tip of the European continent. This area was very dynamic during the Discoveries and it is still maintaining a pleasant ancient look. (52km/32m – optional loop 25k/15m or 15km/9m)
Day 7 Entering the South Coast
You will ride from Sagres towards Lagos along the seacoast, as someone said “it is at least as nice as California best shores” or “even more beautiful than Scotland”. (38km/23m)
Day 8 Departure Day
Lagos is an interesting historical town and you consider to extend your stay to relax at the beach!
I was thrilled by the coastal beauty and the friendliness of the small fishing villages.
And I am extremely grateful for being introduced to all the great food, particularly all the fresh seafood.
